Posted by riverbed on March 19, 2015 in Games & Apps, Phone Tips & Tricks

For some of us, spring looks like it’s just around the corner, while for others, the prospect of May flowers seems like a dream in the far-off future. Whether you’re out getting some sun this March, or spending most of your time indoors, there are some great new Android apps to check out – apps to help you get organized, improve your productivity, or simply provide some entertainment while you wait patiently for that winter snow to melt. Every month, we sort high and low through the latest Android apps and present you with the best new releases for the month. Here are our top 5 picks for March 2015.

PhotoMath

Photo Math

Stuck doing math homework this month? Photo math may be the best lifehack ever for math students. With Photo Math, all you have to do to solve an equation is point your phone’s camera at the problem; Photo Math then spits out the answer automatically, and even provides a step-by-step review on how it got to the solution (in case you actually want to know how to solve the problem yourself next time). More than a simple calculator, this app is actually quite advanced: it can solve advanced problems such as linear equations and quadratic equations, and also includes advanced functions like logarithms. The developers are billing this app as “a great tool to learn math,” but come on, we all know you’re going to use it to cheat on your homework!

Active Soccer 2Active Soccer 2

While there are already a variety of soccer game apps available for Android, Active Soccer’s top-view arcade style gameplay is one that feels particularly at home on handheld devices. This sequel provides all the same features as the original Active Soccer, plus tons of new features and bug fixes, which allow for better gameplay and more control over your team and players.

Clean MasterClean Master

Running out of space on your Android device? Is your phone slowing down or overheating when you try to play games? Are you finding that your phone runs out of battery just when you need to use it the most? If so, then Clean Master is here to solve all of your problems. This app’s features include CPU cooling, junk file cleaning, memory boosting, and app management – everything you need to make your Android run faster and more efficiently. Clean Master even includes its own antivirus protection, which will help to clean up any viruses you may have and protect your device from becoming infected in the future.

Pixel Heroes: Byte and MagicPixel Heroes: Byte & Magic

If you were into Role Playing Games (RPGs) in the 90’s, then you’ll love Pixel Heroes: Byte and Magic. This game has the retro look and feel nailed perfectly, right down to the pixelated graphics and text-based gameplay. This app will quickly take you out of the modern world and into a strange new world full of crafty enemies, deadly dungeons, and randomized hilarity!

Gallery Doctor

If you’re an Android photographer, then the darkness of winter means one thing: blurry and dark photos taken in poor conditions, and if you’re not careful, it’s easy for your phone’s memory to get taken over by these unwanted shots. Fortunately, there’s now a way to quickly clean these up.

Gallery Doctor

Gallery Doctor automatically identifies dark shots, blurry shots, duplicates, and even boring photos, and makes it easy for you to get rid of them so you can save on memory space and take more pictures. Don’t worry though – this app won’t accidentally delete your favorite photos. Once Gallery Doctor has identified all of the potentially unwanted photos on your device, it gives you the option to swipe left if you want to delete a photo, or swipe right to keep it.

Android vs. Windows Phone vs. Apple: Which Is Better for You?

Posted by Unlock Android on March 12, 2015 in Phone Tips & Tricks, Uncategorized

android vs apple vs windowsWith so many different smartphones on the market today, it can be difficult to determine which one will work best for you. A new smartphone is an investment, as it should last for a few years, and in today’s mobile world, the type of smartphone you choose could have a huge impact on how your life works. If you consider the fact that most of us carry our phones around in our pockets or purses all day, use them constantly to communicate with people, pull them out when we want to look up directions or find a recipe, and even sleep with our phones beside our bed and use them as alarm clocks when we wake up in the morning, well, it would seem that choosing a smartphone brand is a decision that could have a major impact on your life.

Each type of smartphone has plenty to offer in its own right, and each brand will have features that appeal more to certain types of users. The question is, which brand is right for you? Here are several questions you can ask yourself to help you determine what sort of phone you should be looking for. By identifying what sort of smartphone user you are, you’ll be able to pick the device that best suits your lifestyle.

What Do You Use Your Phone For?

Perhaps the most important consideration when shopping for a phone is what you’re planning on using your phone for. Will it be primarily a business device or a personal device? Would you like to download lots of apps and games, or do you simply want a device that you can use to make calls and send a few emails?

If you’re shopping for a phone for business use, each Operating System (OS) has different features that will appeal to different types of business users. Windows Phones offer a user-friendly interface that appeals to many businesspeople, but as the operating system is newer, their app store contains fewer apps than their competitors. Some tech-savvy business users love Android, as their OS is highly customizable, although it can also be more prone to security threats if you’re not an experienced user. Finally, the iPhone has long been a mainstay in the business world, but due to the limited number of models available, some business users may prefer to shop elsewhere for their smartphone.

While the Apple and Android (Google Play) app stores boast the widest selection of games, Windows Phone is quickly becoming a major competitor, and they may have new and interesting games that aren’t available through the Apple or Google Play stores. Since almost any device these days will give you plenty of gaming power, the best way to narrow down your choices as a gamer is to browse the app stores and see which store offers the most games that appeal to you.

If, on the other hand, you’re simply looking for a device for personal use that can handle a few apps, then keep reading, as there are a few other questions you should ask yourself before you make your decision.

What’s Your Budget?

Not a fun question but an important question nonetheless is the matter of your budget. It’s important to define your budget before you even think about what type of smartphone might be best for you; there’s no point in discovering the perfect device only to find out there’s no way you could ever afford it.

Coming up with a budget will also make your search a lot easier as it will quickly narrow down your choices. If you’re looking for a low-budget option, an Apple device is probably out of the question, unless you’re looking for a used phone that’s several years old. Android and Windows Phone devices, on the other hand, are available at a variety of price points. Since the Android OS has been around for longer than the Windows Phone OS, Android is typically your best option if you’re looking for a budget device. Manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Huawei, and many others all produce a variety of affordable yet functional Android devices for every type of budget-conscious shopper.

What’s Your Style?

Not to be left out of the equation is the question of personal style. Some people won’t even consider anything other than an iPhone, as Apple devices simply match their personal style. For others, however, the question of personal style might be more complex. Certainly Android and Windows devices allow for more variety, as there are literally hundreds of Android and Windows Phone devices to choose from, rather than the limited Apple Logohalf-dozen options that Apple offers.

You may not believe that personal style is an important factor to think about when choosing a smartphone, but consider how many times a day you’ll end up looking at your phone. If you simply want to make a few calls now and again, then style may not in fact be an important consideration. But if you’re one of the millions of people around the world who carries their phone at their side throughout the day and uses it for everything from helping you wake up in the morning to helping you decide what to make for dinner, then you’ll want to make sure the device you choose is something you’ll actually enjoy looking at.

What Other Devices Do You Own?

A final factor to consider is what other sorts of mobile devices or digital tools you use, and whether these devices and tools will integrate well with your smartphone choice. If you already have an iPad, a MacBook, and an iPod, then an iPhone would seem like your most sensible choice for you. If, on the other hand, you love using Windows 8 on your home computer or laptop, then it’s highly likely that you’ll love using a Windows Phone device. Or if you’re a heavy user of Google products such as Chrome and YouTube, then you’ll have an easy time adopting an Android phone into your lifestyle.

The No Compromise Solution

Today’s smartphone technology has come a long way since the early days of the cell phone, so no matter which developer you choose, you’ll be able to find a device that’s both powerful and available within your budget. Some other considerations to think about as well are what you’re looking for in the device itself. If you find that the OS doesn’t make a big difference to you, then simply going to a store and exploring the features that different devices and manufacturers offer might be the best way for you to make your choice.

Taking the time to think about these questions should help you determine what sort of smartphone user you are. These days, it’s not so much a question of which phone is “better,” it’s more of a question of which phone is better for you, and knowing exactly how you’ll use your phone will help you decide which one is best suited to your lifestyle.

Fortunately, in all of these choices, your mobile service provider is something you don’t have to worry about. No matter what OS and device you choose, UnlockAndroid.net can help you unlock that device so you can use it with any network you want. 4 Reasons to Unlock Your Smartphone

Posted by Unlock Android on March 05, 2015 in Network Unlocking

Since it was declared legal in the United States in 2014, phone unlocking has become an increasingly common practice. But what is it exactly that makes phone unlocking so popular? Here are four of the biggest reasons why people choose to have their mobile devices unlocked.

If You Want to Switch Carriers

One of the biggest motivators for phone unlocking is the need to get out of a restrictive or expensive mobile service contract. Some contracts seem like a good deal at first, but after a few months, end up costing way more than you had initially thought. Your needs may also change over time; for example, you may get a new job that requires you to use your phone for work, or you might move to a new city and want more long distance minutes for calling home. But just because you’ve had a life change, that doesn’t mean you should be penalized by your mobile service provider. Unfortunately, many mobile service contracts last for years and don’t give you many options for changing your service. By unlocking your phone, you can change service providers whenever you want, and find a mobile service plan that serves you rather than your phone company.

If You’re Traveling to Another Country

For most people, traveling to another country with your phone is an extremely expensive endeavor, as most mobile phones are locked to a carrier in the country they were purchased in. Sometimes this carrier will allow you to use your phone internationally through a partner carrier in another country, but this typically costs a lot more than buying a local SIM card. Other carriers simply won’t let you use your phone in another country at all, unless you’re interested in paying exorbitant roaming fees.

With an unlocked phone, on the other hand, you can use any SIM card you want from any country without paying extra fees. So when you arrive at your destination, you can simply purchase a SIM card from a local provider and use your phone as if it was purchased in that country.

If You’re Re-selling Your Phone

Selling your used phone is a great way to make a bit of money to help you buy a new phone. Typically, however, if your phone is a few years old, it won’t have a very high resale value, as mobile technology moves quickly and many of today’s budget smartphones are better than the high-end options from a few years ago.

A great way to boost your phone’s resale value is to sell it as an unlocked device. Most people who are looking for a used phone will still be tied in to a contract with a particular carrier, or at least have a carrier in mind that they like using, so unlocking your device opens it up to a much wider pool of potential buyers. And since unlocked phones carry so many benefits, it’s easy to see why a used unlocked phone would fetch a much higher pricethan a used phone that’s locked to a carrier.

If You Want More Handset Choices

These days, there are thousands of different smartphones to choose from. But what happens if the carrier you’re with doesn’t sell the handset you want? No problem. Simply find the phone you want and unlock it. Then you can have the device you want, and use it with the carrier of your choice.

Overall, unlocking your phone gives you more control over how you use your phone and how much you pay for your contract. And in today’s world of big business and multinational conglomerates, doesn’t more control sound like a good thing?

Every day, dozens of new apps hit the Google Play store, but for every great app that gets uploaded, there are a hundred not-so-great ones that get uploaded as well. So in order to help you sort through the noise and discover only the best apps out there, we’re created a new regular feature where we’ll discuss the top 5 new apps for Android every month. And to help kick things off in style, we’ve got some great discoveries right here for our February edition.

Microsoft Office MobileMicrosoft_Office_2013_logo_and_wordmark

A much-anticipated addition to the Google Play store for February 2015 is Microsoft Office Mobile. As the official Office companion for Android, this app includes versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for both your phone and your tablet. This app allows you to access and modify documents on your mobile device, just like you would on your computer. Also, thanks to Microsoft’s new partnership with Dropbox, you can easily store and share your documents via Dropbox as well as other cloud-based platforms such as OneDrive and SharePoint. Of course, everything has been optimized for smaller screen sizes, and you can even create new documents on your mobile device and then share them via your cloud server to your desktop later. The app is also free, so if you do any sort of work on your Android device, there’s no excuse for not downloading this app.

Game of Thrones Episode 2: The Lost Lords

Logo_Game_of_ThronesOn the other side of the productivity spectrum is another much-anticipated app –Game of Thrones Episode 2: The Lost Lords. The game comes from the same developer that brought us the Walking Dead game. If you haven’t played Game of Thrones for Android yet, the game allows you to take on the role of different characters from the TV show and change the story around you based on the decisions you make. This is the second episode in what will eventually be a six-part series, so stay tuned for more from this developer in the future.

uncloudedUnclouded

With all this talk about cloud sharing these days, it can be easy for you (or your documents) to get lost in a maze of different cloud services. But now, with Unclouded, you’ll be able to clear your head and easily sort out your cloud documents. Unclouded integrates all of your documents from Dropbox, Google Drive, and many other cloud services into one friendly interface. With this app, you’ll never again have to ask yourself the question, “Now where did I store that document?”

wire

Wire

If you like to keep up with the latest in social media developments, you may have heard of Wire already. Wire is the latest competitor to social apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp. Not only does this new app allow you to video chat with friends via an attractive-looking interface, it also allows you to share music and photos, and boasts excellent audio quality so you never miss a word from any of your friends.

Public Toilet Finder

public toilet finderFile this one under the “why has no one thought of it before” category. Public Toilet Finder does just what the name says it does – it finds the nearest public toilets to your location, and even shows you where to find them on a map and helps you navigate to the nearest one via a Google Maps-style navigation tool. This app is sure to be a hit in Europe, where public facilities are few and far between, and hopefully none of us will ever have to say the words “I just couldn’t find a restroom” again, especially when we’re talking to a police officer.
